Signficant Architectural Features:
Vernacular farmhouse, with central hall (possibly originally a breezeway). Opposing entries have double wood panel doors. Surviving balustrade simply crafted. House has single room off porch, two large rooms accessed through central hall, two rooms accessed from the outside on rear. Recessed back entry with an additional door adjacent to double doors for access to stair case. House on lightwood block piers. Brick chimney on stone foundation in poor condition on South elevation. Windows DHS (6/6). Associated with two historic outbuildings.
Historical Information:
Homestead of Neil Alexander Bethune, Kershaw County Farmer, and son of Daniel Bethune. Family became Kershaw County residents in 1825. Neil (c.1847) was a Civil War veteran. He returned home after the war and married a Mclauren and they built this homestead. The Bethunes had six children; Mamie, Ola, Christine, Kate, Stella, and Neil (died early). The family moved to new home on WaltonSt in 1911 (Resource 1019). All children went to college; Kate married Dr. Ernest Truesdale and resided at the family home. Margaret Truesdale, her daughter married a druggist who operated and built drug store on Main Street. Mrs. Brinson resides at 603 Walton (Resource 1021).
